Out of the Closet!
I should have taken a before photo. You saw what was piled on the bed. I whittled it down to this!
In the process, I weeded out even some fabric that I brought from our previous house...We have been here around 15 years.
Does that tell you how bad the closet needed cleaning?
Now...Not today, but in the near future, I will clean out the closet in the computer room...It is a regular sized closet with double folding doors.
It used to be April's room and there are still a few remnants from when she lived here...Long ago...
It has fabric, yarn, books, and other odds and ends...I am not looking forward to that one.
While I was cleaning out, I found these two bags that I started and haven't yet finished. I am glad that I didn't. Now I can put a pocket on them for my cell phone...Yup. These were before I broke down and started carrying my cell phone in my purse.
I also found the start of a hand pieced quilt. I am going to have to work on that one of these days. It may change it's mind and want to be a pillow instead.
Today is the mini meeting, so I am taking it easy until then. I dragged out this start of a rug. There is a full pattern somewhere under rugs, from when I first designed it. There are now 96 rug entries in the label section....Good luck finding it...I do know that it's there. I just don't know where. I am going to have to put in a new category...Rug Patterns. But not right now.
I am going to put my feet up and stitch.
By the way, the URL for the bog coat entry, yesterday, was wrong. It is http://caseymini.blogspot.com/2010/01/tessies-sewing-box.html Sorry about the mix up. It is at the bottom of this entry.
See you tomorrow.

She's a Closet Diva....
The "she" that I am referring to is.....Altogether now......Tessie!
I am starting on the second floor now. I have to finish the closet first because of the dividing wall between it and the bedroom. That wall is in two sections.
As soon as I got the rod installed in the back and the floor covering in place, she started loading up.
This is the person that seldom carries a purse/bag or ever wears shoes. She crammed five purses into the shelves and put eight pair of shoes on the rack at the bottom.
To her credit, for once she actually hung all of her aprons up. Well, not all. I should say, her most regularly worn aprons. It won't last. She will take them down, one at a time. She will wear said apron for a couple of days and then throw it in the annex. That's where aprons go to either die or get replaced in the closet by me.
She managed to squeeze in various other objects that have nothing to do with wearables....Unless you count the sock monkey that was made of her last pair of socks, before she started going barefoot........I think that was in about 1945.... See how she is holding the shopping bag just over the line? this is her idea of putting new things away. The next step will be to drop it straight down....There it will stay until someone takes the trouble to put it away. It won't be her...
OK the door is now in place. I did notice that the apron that she was wearing yesterday is nowhere in the closet....Off to a good start....
All was good until she got a look in the mirror a little while ago. White paint doesn't match red hair. You should have heard the howling and carrying on!
She is now with her private hair stylist....Remember the last time Zar got a hold of her head? Yup! The electric hair dryer is in play.
If you want to see what happened the first time she was talked into using it, go here. http://caseymini.blogspot.com/2010/06/good-morning-im-balthazar.html And this is how it was put together...
http://caseymini.blogspot.com/2010/06/every-girl-should-have-one.html
I am going to be brave and go see what Zar did to her hair this time. I also want to check to see if he is still alive and in one piece....
Then I am going back to work.
See you tomorrow.

Where Did the Sun Go?
I was out at 4:30 this morning to go get groceries. It was 32degrees. I beat the crowds, but not the temperature.
I decided that today would be the day that I had to clean out that closet that has all of the fabric stored inside. I seldom go into this one. At least not the left hand side. Whoever designed this was a complete idiot! It has double doors. That's good. The doors are to the far right hand side. That's bad.
About three and a half feet are virtually inaccessible. I don't know why they couldn't have put the doors in the middle. Most irritating....
So about once a year, I dive in and pull everything out. That's the only way it can be cleaned.
I won't bore you with the piles of stuff all over the floor. I did find, at the bottom of the back, an oak, curved glass room box that I have never done anything with. One of these days....It is very pretty and sits on cabriole legs that I found in a thrift shop. Someone, probably a high school shop student, made the frame for an oak footstool. Amazingly, it is the same dimensions as the box. It makes a nice occasional table when the two are put together.
You may ask why I never did anything with it? Simple. It is a very awkward shaped box. The ceiling is high, but not high enough for a second story. I have argued with this box for years about what it is going to be. One of these days, I am going to win! For now, it is out of the way.
I found my stock of yarn. Some is going away now. Some is staying to be made into something or be finished.
The half sock to the left is a good example. I started designing Halloween socks a few years ago. Then I got down to the part that would logically be boring black.
The six year old's attention span wandered. I am going to leave these out where the six year old will see them and get a guilty conscience. they will get finished. My goal is next Halloween. Tessie says that they would look good with pointy toes and no shoes....
The crochet below the sock is a granny afghan that I started a few years ago also. That's another one that I am bound and determined to finish. I really like it, but it is so time consuming. Every square in it is different.
So far, I have found two candidates for the Chesterfield.
They are both fat quarters that April found at her favorite quilt shop. They are both quilt weight cotton. The first one is a kind of tweedy material that looks like upholster's fabric in miniature. I think that it will make great mini furniture.
The second one is my first choice so far. Cheaters sometimes win....This one would be easy to tuft. I could use the diamonds in the fabric as a guide. I would probably use every other dot.
So....While I clean, I talk to myself, answer myself and sometimes argue. That part I do with Tessie. She likes the last fabric and wants me to stop cleaning and start upholstering her couch.
The only problem is, I can't reach the door! Until the stuff is all put neatly back into the closet, I can't get out of the room!
The next step in the Chesterfield will be here tomorrow. I promise. Can someone slip a pizza under the door, so that I can keep cleaning?
See you tomorrow.

Something's Missing....
I am not looking forward to it, but I will try to re write it and attach it to the bottom of this one somehow if it doesn't show up.
The calamity scared me into doing something that I should have been doing all along. Walter gifted me with a "My Book". It's a memory thingy for saving a book when you are writing one....I am not, but I wanted it, so that I could save the blog entries if something happens. I spent most of the morning fiddling with that and saving a year and a half worth of blogs. I am going to have to go back through and do it so that only the blog itself and the comments are saved. Right now I have all of the stuff on the sidebar saved over and over. Wasted space. One copy of that would be sufficient.
So. Not a lot of minis got done. I did paint the outside of the Apron annex to match the outside of the townhouse.
Before it was even dry to the touch, Tessie was in there rearranging things. She now has all of the aprons and one nightgown squeezed into the top....Somewhere along the line, she managed to go shopping. The bottom is filled with boxes and bags full of stuff. I may have to nominate her for "Clean House" on the Style channel if she doesn't cut it out. Hmmmmm....I wonder if they do mini houses?
She did manage to get the doors closed with some pushing and shoving.....Then when they popped open again, she pulled out a couple of the boxes and tried standing on them to get up to the top.
She gave up after a few tries and declared that she needs a ladder or some folding stairs to get up there.....
I asked why she stuffed everything in there like that. She replied,"You know that I need room in the townhouse closet for my dress up clothes."
Actually, I didn't even know that she had dress up clothes....Please tell me that this is not a sign of things to come.
Before I quit for the day, I think that it was Minka that wanted to see the pomegranates as they progressed. I went out and took a couple of photos. Here are the next two stages.
The first one is where they have lost their petals. The front part starts shrinking down that the back starts filling up with the seeds....
Next, they start turning green and swelling. As you can see, we are going to have a bumper crop this year. I will probably take some of the smaller ones off, so that the larger ones will have room to grow. That's how you get the ones the size of grapefruit.
Now I am going to go do some more room cleaning.(Don't tell Tessie that I am really eating bonbons and reading Steven Tyler's new biography. It's really good so far.) I will probably be checking to see if the missing text has returned about every half hour.
See you tomorrow, hopefully with all of my entries in place.
Well....So far, no missing post.

An Apron Annex Is In Order......
I tried very hard to ignore her. It didn't work. I heard her rummaging around the workroom. The next thing I knew, she had commandeered a small hanging cabinet. Her idea being, that it would hang on the wall near the townhouse, so that she could easily reach the aprons.
"Come on! It will be easy!", and with that said, she whisked it away to the kitchen. In about half an hour, I had it wallpapered, floored and a pole arrangement, like the one in the townhouse closet installed.
It wasn't easy, what with Tessie trying to fill the closet before it was finished and Widget helping out any way he could....His idea of helping is pushing in to get his ears scratched.
I showed this before, but I will repeat. It is an easy way to install closet poles. I simply cut a couple of boards to stand at each end of the closet. I drilled a hole in each one. Then I cut a skewer the length of the closet space. I won't give measurements. Each closet is different.
After I finished installing the rod, I started making wire hangers. Bending them as fast as I could, I made enough to hang five more aprons.
"Casey!!! Help me with this door!". Heaven forbid that she would put down the aprons and open it herself....
OK...I opened the door. Now you can see what I am up against....Lots and lots more aprons to hang.....Very little space to hang them in....
I just hope that once this annex and the regular closet are stuffed, she will be satisfied....

Hanging Up...

By the time I arrived, she was blanketed in a mountain of clothing, mainly aprons.
She picked out eight pieces to hang.
When you hang mini clothes, they don't look right unless you pin them on a pin board and spray them with hairspray......Or Tessie's secret formula...

I caught a shot of Tessie and her trusty assistant, Zar working on that. Tessie had numerous bottles and jars scattered around the worktable. Zar stood patiently by with one of Nikki's http://nikkinikkinikki72.blogspot.com/ famous bloody candles. It seems that the candle is part of the formula. Very messy. I think that unscented, extra hold hairspray is simpler. And besides, it can be rinsed out when the clothing is needed again.

Currently, the clothes are drying on their hangers, so I can't really do any more today. Please notice that Tessie found the Christmas apron and her hat while we were sorting out.
She is ready for Christmas now....Even if I'm not....Back to work.
See you tomorrow.

In the Closet.....

The six year old mind strikes again...... This morning neither Tessie or I felt in the mood for more Christmas. We both wanted to do something different.
Tessie, aiding and abetting the six year old, slyly suggested working on the townhouse that we had both been ignoring for a while now.
How could I refuse? Tessie didn't screech or whine. She simply asked if we could work on her closet. I agreed at once.
Simple, quick project. Just what I needed.
Remember those nine compartment, dollar shadow boxes that I bought at Dollar Tree some time ago? I ran one through the saw and cut off three of the boxes.
The side that I cut off will go against the wall, so will never be seen.

Next I glued it to a removable wall. I still have to do the hallway and stairs behind the closet. When that is finished, I will be able to just slide the whole thing into place.
I cut and glued some half inch scale crown molding to the top and bottom edges on two sides.
Then I used chair rail molding to fancy up the front of the dividers and shelves.
Tessie insisted on painting the whole thing, wall and all, light ivory with Ceramcoat.

The six year old couldn't wait to see what it looked like. I slid it into place. Hey! It fits! The side wall isn't glued in yet either. Thus the crack.
Once I chase all of the animals out, I will pull it back out and put a second coat of paint on the shelves. Tessie lost interest after the first coat.
There will be some kind of hanging rack where Zar is standing when I am finished.
I imagine that before I am done Tessie will want more room for her clothes. You see, she seldom changes her clothes unless she gets new ones, but she has to have some place to store the ones that she doesn't wear. You know the philosophy. She says, "As soon as I get rid of any of them, I might decide that I want to wear them again......" She feels about clothes, the way that I feel about miniature supplies. Only mine reads "Never throw anything useful away." Why do you think that I have to do so much cleaning in the workroom?
Speaking of the workroom. It is already starting to pile up again. I should go pick things up in there.
See you tomorrow.

But....There's a Hole in the Wall!!!
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I didn't take a before photo....This is the after. I went through every box and cleaned them out. I relabeled most of it. I still have some labels to make, but after I do that, this one bookcase will be much more efficient.
As I said, I cleaned every box, even the miniature corner box on the second shelf. It really needed doing.
Here's the after shot of that one. Remember to poke the photos.
I was on a kick of doing small boxes with armoires and closets in them a while ago and this is one of my favorites.
As soon as I finished, Tessie moved in for the kill. She has commissioned me to make her a round beaded bag like the one that she is pointing at in the photo. However.....She doesn't like blue. She will pick out the beads as I make it. It sounds like a tutorial is coming.
She watched me for a while. She zealously pointed out every little speck of dirt and anything out of place as I went.
Finally, when I couldn't stand it anymore, I turned around and told her, in a voice that was a little too loud, "Go clean your own room!"
She stomped her feet and disappeared. I kept hearing clunks and a lot of banging.....Wait a minute....The noise was coming from the computer room... That's not her room! It's ours!
Remember the "secret" storage room that she has behind the wall in there? Yup....She was cleaning, with the help of Zar. His eyes looked a bit glazed over, like he was not exactly sure why he was there.
They have pulled the whole room out of the wall! Tessie turned and calmly said, "Don't worry about the hole. It's not very big. You can patch it in no time."
I gritted my teeth and hissed at her, "Fix it, and fix it NOW!"
Thank goodness for her zapping capabilities. I blinked my eyes and the hole was gone, but so was the room that she was working on. Before she could knock a hole in another wall, I yelled at her to put it in the workroom on a shelf.
Amazing! She followed instructions. I went into the workroom. Granted, there was a pile of debris on the floor in front of the book shelf....What was on the shelf, was now on the floor and Tessie had centered that awful storage room on a most prominent shelf.
At least it wasn't one that I had already finished cleaning. It should be interesting to see what she has stowed away in that room. When she finishes, I might just have to set it up as a bedroom. As I remember, that was the intent for the box before she stole it and zapped it into the wall.
I wonder how long her job on the wall is going to last? After all, most of her fix it zaps are only temporary and wear off after a while.
I need to go back to work now.....Only 5 more shelf units to go....Then there's the closet..... and the desk....
See you tomorrow.

Progress.....I think.

I built the hearth out of foam core. I won't bother you with photos of the first coat of gesso that I put on the walls and both sides of this. It would be literally like watching paint dry. Just take my word for it.
I will show you, instead, a couple of costumes that I have made. They are a part of a series that I am doing on historic dress. That was one of my fields of interest when I was in college.
This first one is a walking dress from 1895. It was copied from an illustration from Harper's Bazaar that year.
I made each dress with accessories from the same illustration.
I added a hand drawn sketch of how the clothes would have been worn to the back of the box.
The hat is straw with silk roses.
The parasol is silk.
The second one is from the 1840s. It's a Promenade Dress(fancy name for another walking dress) from 1840.
The interesting thing about this one is that the collar of the dress is actually made of a scrap of fabric, I believe from a nightgown, from 1840! I bought a box of antique lace and fabric. I was lucky enough to get parts of what was probably a wedding nightgown. It was hand made(before the invention of the sewing machine in 1849) and hand embroidered with the lady's initials and the date. You can see a scan of the embroidery at the bottom, in front of the dress.
This is one of my favorite pieces just because of that scrap of fabric. Someone must have really loved that nightgown to save the pieces for over 150 years.
OK, I have stalled you long enough for today. I am going to go collapse now.
See you tomorrow.

Taking the Day Off......

This is a close up of one of my armoires. I think that I mentioned it in one of the other entries. This one was great fun to fill. I made the sheet sets simply by cutting and folding. I tied each set with silk ribbon to match and finished each one off with a silk rose.
If you want to try your hand at making some, just use light weight cotton and remember what Martha Stuart always tells us to do with real sheets and towels. There should be no edges showing......Always fold the material towards the center so that all you see is folds. Fold all of the side edges towards the center and then fold all of the ends of that long piece to the center. No edges showing.
The blankets are just folded material. The same folding technique was used on those. Thanks Martha!
The perfume bottles are beads with jewelry findings for lids.
The hat was a handwoven Mexican import in wild colors. I painted it and decorated it with silk roses.
Mr. Toad is behaving himself today. He got into the brandy snifter last night.....
The second one was a purchased armoire. I simply painted it black and attached a jewelry finding to fancy it up.

I covered the inside of the doors with lace.
The sheets in this one are the same as the other one. There's a secret to the sheets. At one time I was thinking of doing a bed and bath store. I made sheet sets until I was blue in the face. Then I decided I didn't want to do that. Thus I had filler for the armoires.
My daughter made the zebra striped bag. Yes. She actually does minis once in a while.
The beaded bags and the necklaces on the doors are made with #15 and smaller beads. The top one is flat circular peyote stitch and the bottom two are round peyote stitch.
The necklaces are done on fine wire and finished with a hook clasp. They can actually be worn by the fashionable 5" lady.

The wicker basket on the floor has all of the goodies for m'lady to have a fabulous spa treatment. The larger jars are really filled with bath salts.
The shoes are simple mules. One of these days I am going to have to do a tutorial on them. Very easy.
That's it for today. Back to the bed.

There will be a slight pause......

Here's something to keep you busy.
This is my pet alligator, Friskie. I had to name him that because of the name on the bowl It seems to fit his personality tho. He is kind of like George. You will see him wander into a scene from time to time. I didn't make him. I do love him tho. He just seems to add something to the scene.
I also have a pet toad. You can see him in this photo in his little basket by the right leg of the armoire. I didn't make the toad but I did make the armoire. It was the project at an Arizona State day several years ago. I made most everything else in the scene. Oops! Not the little carved wooden jar by the left foot of the armoire. It was handcarved in India. It opens to store secrets.
Anyway, I thought I would stall you with cute pets until I can get back to work tomorrow.
I am, at present, cleaning up the quilt shop. WOW! You guys really know how to party!! OK. Who stuffed the jelly roll into the button bowl???
See you tomorrow.

Finishing Touches

Until then I will let you browse through the mini shop next door.
I was mistaken about the house in the window. It is actually a resin piece. I was thinking it was metal. Wrong! It was still a raw piece that I had to do all of the painting on.
This is the interior of the shop.

There may soon be mayhem in the shop. There is a rather larger frog sitting on the counter. If he is real, the way that the dog is looking at him could indicate trouble......
This is a close up of the armoire.

Here is a shot of the back shelves. The houses with the thatched roofs on the top shelf are copies of real early American houses.

I add to the stock from time to time when I find something I like. I don't think that this shop will ever be fully finished. It is just a collection that keeps growing.
Remember! Tomorrow is the grand reopening. I hope to see you there!

I Tried!

Somehow I don't think this is working. I give you 14 pair of shoes and a couple of purses to boot(no pun intended) and you still want to see progress on the bricks.

Sidetracked.....

I am going to try to put a new entry on here every day. Sometimes old. S ometimes new. We shall see how long that lasts........
