Make It Do...

"Use it up.  Wear it out. Make it do or do without."  One of my favorite sayings.

I have been seeing tee shirt yarn and how to make it all over the net lately. 

I have a bunch of men's tee shirts that I wore around the house, that are now too big.  I've made it a point to only lose one size, but they are not wearable anymore.  So....

I cut one up with scissors yesterday. That took too long.

This morning, I took the easy way out.  I got out my rotary cutter and a ruler and went to town on another one.  It took about ten minutes that way.  As opposed to 45 minutes to and hour the scissor way. 

You fold the shirt lengthwise down the middle and to one side.  You can see that in the first photo at the top of the yardstick. Leave yourself  about 2" folded.

Then when you have all of the strips cut, you go back and cut diagonally between the strips to get one long piece.

After that, the fun begins.  You stretch the strips and they roll into nice fat yarn.

People make knitted, crocheted, beaded and other items from it. 

That is, if the cat doesn't get it first.  My supervisor started grabbing it as soon as I started stretching it!

This is the ball that I did yesterday.  Someone had directions on the net for making a rag rug.  They took plain old crochet thread and crocheted around the yarn.  I didn't go back and look.  I just started doing it. It seems to be working.  It might take a while to get a whole rug out of the stuff, but I am, for all intents and purposes using it up and making it do.
