Quilted Floor...

Remember the ceiling that I measured and drew?   OK.  So it didn't get off of the drawing board, but the pattern did.

It is now the pattern for the floor.  I decided that the time doing the ceiling would be better spent doing a floor that would be seen without headstands.

Tessie and Zar dropped in to see how the windows were coming.... They aren't.. I am still thinking on that.  I have a couple of ideas, but I can't find my soutash braid...

I replicated the ceiling pattern on a piece of card stock.  It will be much easier to work on the floor if it isn't in a confined area.

You may be asking yourself how quilting comes in...Here it is.

I happen to be a fan of hexagon quilts and have used this template for them for many years.

I went and dug it out of the quilting stuff in the closet, laid it in the very center of the hexagon and marked everything on the template.

That gave me a starting point and lots of reference points on the floor.  I can use them to make sure that the design in all six sections are the same.

I am using the "dots of glue" method to attach the veneer.  This will keep the floor from warping.

After the wood is laid and the finish is applied, I will simply glue the whole thing in place.  Much easier than trying to get my hands in the tower to do it.

As you can see, I just started...This could take all day just to lay the veneer.  So....I am going back to work now.

See you tomorrow.

Oh, love the idea! Can't wait to see the finished result. How smart to cross over from one craft to the other!

I'm curious to see the floor finiched.
Thanks for sharing.

I think a hexagon floor will look fabulous. I look forward to seeing it finished.

That is a brilliant idea! Do you use pre-cut strips of veneer or do you buy sheets and cut them yourself? Is your base normal card stock or the thicker artist board? Sorry for all the questions, but I think this is a much easier way to attempt patterned wood flooring without buying a pre-made kit. The room I am attempting to floor doesn't fit the standard kit sizes unfortunately.

Lene, I had a lot of sheet veneer. I cut my own. I did it on regular card stock. I have done it before, but always in the room. If I use this method again, I will use poster board. The card stock lost some strength in the process. Hang on until the next blog and I will go into more detail.

The floor pattern is going to be great! I like how each of the long pieces is offset. In all my years of drafting I have never seen a hexagon template - very cool!
