I should have known better. These cages aren't made out of the best of wood. I should have just tried it on a little bit of the back. Should have....
I started at the peak of the roof and worked down. I am a pretty good wood carver. Why didn't I stop? I guess I was just in the mood for woodcarving... I'm not anymore.
The wood on this cage has to be the worst wood I have ever been in contact with. It was very hard in spots and some of it had grain and other pieces were just plain hard.
Sooooo.....This morning I went over to Walmart and got some wood filler.
I filled all of the carving in. Now I am waiting for it to dry. Then to sanding.
Originally, I had thought to paint it with gypsy like designs....That wasn't such a bad idea after all...
It's either that or cutting out some basswood to fit the front of all of the pieces, carve that and glue it on...I really would like some carving on the front...
Meanwhile, Tessie and Zar are laughing, pointing and singing an "I told you so!" song.
I will be cleaning and laundering and trying to decide what to do, if anybody needs me.

Hi Casey. As I am watching you
work on this birdcage, you say you cover up the wires on both sides with foamcore. What type of glue do you use for that? Do you think matboard would also work? Thanks for your input. It looks like a very interesting project. I am looking forward to it's completion.

I think the carving you did looks great! I love your idea of painting it and/or hi-lighting it with gold...

Phylissa, I use the foamcore because it gives the walls thickness that turns out to be about the same as the wood. You could probably use the mat board if you wanted thinner walls. I use just plain old Alene's Tacky or Fast grab. It just depends on what is at arm's length at the time.
Kathi, If you could see the carving and/or the gold paint you wouldn't think it was so great. I didn't have any control over it at all. The wood was just too uneven to carve. I have carved on everything from pine to Apricot wood and never ran across anything like this stuff. Awful!!!

Casey, you make my day with your blog. I just got back from Home Depot on Calif. high desert and they have a section near the mouldings called "tiny trims" that are very close to being usable for minis. You might take a look at your store.

This is SO something I would do!! I keep telling myself "stop" but I never listen!..ever. This is especially applicable to clay items I make that get too soft when I'm working on it. I keep telling myself to stop and put it in the freezer, but keep going and eventually ruin it. O_o
I am sure you will be able to fix this just fine. Especially with your little helpers :)
Oh, it's sooo good to know I'm not the only one who has those "brilliant ideas" which seem so good in theory but then reality won't agree. :)
I thought only I did that... lol!
But we do learn from those episodes, right?
And most of the time we end up finding an even better solution. Being as talented as you are, I'm sure it'll look stunning in the end, can't wait to see!!!

If Tessie and Zar are so smart why did they not test a section to show you? I It was a great idea, it's just a shame it didn't work out. Good luck fixing it, i know you'll make it look great.
