You Can Let Us Out Now.....

Having not spent any money at the antique mall in Scottsdale when we were up there, I decided to go see what kind of damage I could do at 22nd Street Antique mall here in town this morning.

I didn't find any antiques, but I did find something much more valuable!

Two bird cages that were dirt cheap....Not for the birds. They were two different sizes. The small one fit inside the larger one and as soon as I saw them, I knew that they were perfect.

When I got home, I showed them to Tessie and Zar....When I opened the door to the smaller one, Tessie jumped in to look around. I took it outside and hung it up to take photos. Just right for one witch.

I brought it back in the house and asked Tessie to try out the second one.

Zar joined her, thinking that it was a bit like a ride at Disneyland.

Again, I took it out and put it on the hook.

I took a couple of photos and then told them what it was really for. I said, "When the two of you get into an argument and can't settle it, I am putting you in the cage and leaving you on the back porch until you do!"

It worked! They have been so agreeable for the past hour that it is unnerving. I let them out and they both are being civil for a change. I guess that they don't like the idea of being hung out to dry in the heat....OK. Back to business. I forgot to take photos of the bending process with the veneer. This is a fake, just to show you how I did it.

If you can find them, this type of hair clip works great for holding things in place while they dry. I got a bag of them at one of the thrift shop. I don't think that you can get them new anymore.

I put them on both the top and bottom edge of the curve, closely together and walked away until the glue was completely dry.

When it was, I went back and cut drawer fronts....NO...I didn't do real drawers. Zar told me not to. He has his own way of getting into them. Remember the secret room in the Clockwork cottage. He's sneaky that way.

I had to hold the drawer fronts and the doors on with blue painter's tape until they were dry.

The hardware is made of jewelery findings. They are silver bead spacers.

I cut the top of the counter from 1/8" bass and painted it black. I will marbleize it later today and cut a hole for the sink. The right end of the counter will have a glass cooking top and the left will have some kind of refrigerator contraption.

Hang in there. I will get to it. I really want to get this done and go on to something else. I still have a long list of things to do...

Back to work.

See you tomorrow.

Hi Casey. That is one COOL cabinet!Very Art Deco style.

Okay, I found my wood veneer trim, now what shall I make? I purchased Weldwood Wood Trim many years ago in Walnut to make wood plank floors and it works great when the planks are mounted on foamcore (as for a roombox or matboard for the room in a house, gluing down the planks when the floor can be worked on flat outside the room.I added a coat of Deft Clear Wood Finish. This wood trim is paper thin.

WOW! Your cabinet looks like a fine piece of furniture! Love how you staggered the drawers! Great work!
I have one piece of wood veneer. Now I'm thinking I may need more.
You are SO inspiring!

Where can I find the veneer?

Jo, I am afraid that I am not much help with where to find it. The pieces that I have are some that I bought from a friend years ago. I have no idea where she got them. You might try looking on line...Good luck.

Lovely job on the cabinetry, Casey. And the birdcages are a brilliant idea!

Phyllisa, I used the wood trim that you are talking about in Hubert's Haberdashery. I ironed it directly onto the floor of the building. It worked great. I don't think that it would work for this kind of furniture. It's too narrow. This veneer came in big sheets.

The cabinet looks beautiful. I love the rounded corners. People here can still get pieces of veneer at small carpenter's workshops.

I took a minor blog reading break to actually get some work done. I come back and you have created this fabulous cabinet! Now I have to go read what I missed. So much for my break. Now I have to play catch up. As it stands now, It is
2:45am and it is my first opportunity to read blogs. I need some half days squeezed in between my full days.

That turned out nice, Casey! It has an ultra modern, sleek feeling about it. The off-set drawers are an interesting variation. I like the l@@k. Very clever.

The kitchen island is the best!

Oops, I see it's a counter, not an island. Anyway, I think it's great!

Actually, you can get those hair clips new. I've seen them at SAS on Apach Blvd near Mcclintock in Tempe. I can't quite remember, but I think they're either 15 or 25 cents each along with other kinds of clips.

Thanks Anna! I will have to check the SAS here in Tucson to see if they also have them.
