I Have Shingles...

No, not the kind that make you itch... Shingles for Daisy's house.

But first, I have to show you the latest basket experiment from last night. I bought a basket with a metal frame at the thrift shop yesterday.  Last night I tore all of the ugly plastic like wicker off of it and started covering it with magazine reeds.

The handle isn't lopsided, it swivels.  It wasn't right on center.  I ran out of reeds when I was all done except for half a handle...Rats! Now I have to go make more reeds to finish just that little bit.

Now about the shingles... I painted the roof brown this morning, so that the cracks between the shingles won't show raw wood.

Zar and Tessie are just wandering around holding their noses.  I am to the next step now.
I found a bottle of the vinegar and steel wool solution on the back porch. It has been out there for a year or so.  Still good.  However it was too cold to do the shingles outside, so I spread out a garbage bag and did them on the kitchen counter.

The piece to the far left is the raw wood shingles.  If you start at the right and go to the left, you will see how the shingles progress as you paint them with the solution...Curly and kind of orange....To finally flat and starting to turn gray...

I will let these dry completely and then start shingling...I hear a lot of people complain about shingling... Don't hate me...I enjoy doing it.

I cheated and left the shingles in the whole sheets, or as close as possible.  I laid them out flat on the garbage bag and just painted them with an old paintbrush.  It was a lot faster than when I do individual shingles and will be fine.  I want old worn out, faded shingles, so no problem..

I have to go now and put them out on the porch.  The whole house smells like pickles.  Not pleasant, and when Walter gets back from golf, he won't be pleased...I don't think that he will buy it if I tell him that we are having pickles for lunch...Just pickles.

Back to work.

See you tomorrow.

Hi Casey! I never thought to leave the shingles all on the sheet before painting them but it makes perfect sense when you think about all the time it will save!
I look forward to seeing how they will eventually look on the roof!
I LOVE Pickles! :))

Elizabeth, it works better for staining than for painting. The stain naturally penetrates the wood. If painting, it still saves time, but you may have to do a lot of touch up along the edges. You can do that after the shingles are glued to the roof.
