I Mayn't and I Shan't!

The Terrible Two received a short note from the elusive Daisy Eulalia yesterday afternoon.

They are now back to speaking to me and even helping some.

It seems that Daisy informed them that this is not to be her main home.  She is a traveler of sorts...Time and Distance.  She is away a lot of the time and she will need caretakers until she returns.

Right up their alley.  Free lodging and if I know them, they will help themselves to whatever is in the refrigerator, if there is one.

They picked up two words from Daisy's letters.  I had forgotten about them until I started thinking about Grandma Daisy.  She used to use them a lot when I was a teen...

They were shan't and mayn't.  Shall not and may not contractions.  I haven't heard anyone use them I years.  I knew when Grandma Daisy was serious.  Those two words came out in her speech.

Out of curiosity, I looked them up online and found that both words are from the 1600s!  Perhaps my grandmother was a time traveler too?

Anyway, Daisy Eulalia wrote to ask the Terrible Two to oversee the building because she won't be coming back from Egypt until it is finished and she can move in directly.

Meanwhile, I gave up on trying to get Tessie out of the new chair and started another one for Daisy.  It will be a wicker wing chair when it is done.  I like the color better anyway...Only one problem...I think that Zar has his eye on this one.

The house is coming along nicely.  I finished putting in the living room bay. It isn't bad, but will need a lot of trimming out to look good.

It adds a little depth to the living room.

About the kitchen bay?  What kitchen bay?  It is a ridiculous half inch deep.

I didn't even bother to glue it in place or tape it.

No question...It is going to grow.  Why bother to bump it out only a half inch.

I shan't!  If I am going to do it, it has to come out at least a couple of feet(inches).

Back to work.  I mayn't have the house finished tomorrow, but I will be back anyway.

See you then.

Glad to see the Terrible Two are helping for once.
Would you believe that when I learned English in school ( in the 20th century, not the 17th!), I was taught "shan't" as being the propper word! I have always used it.
I think I was dropped off in the wrong century :-)

Veronique, I think that we should start a campaign to use the interesting antiquated words, before they are forgotten. Some are so much more ezpressive than the terms used now. I am starting with these two!

Where is spell check when I need it? LOL

I love those words and sometimes encounter them in my reading. I especially love shan't but I would never dare use it when speaking. I think it would make people laugh or grin or cough or choke or something! You have created an interesting character in Daisy. A time and distance traveler! Just the thing for the terrible two. They will love putting their noses in her things when she gets settled in. The house is looking good and it's a good idea to enlarge the kitchen bay window. It will be so much nicer and one can do so much when decorating a bay window. A demain!

Maybe it's an English thing, I use shan't occasionally but maynt I have only come across in literature, it's more west country, Cornwall or up north in England. I'm from south east so have a 'bbc' voice which gets me bullied for sounding posh, so I may add more shan't and maynts to add flair to my otherwise boring accent! Lol xxx

Freya, I have no idea where my grandmother picked it up. She was in Michigan, USA.
