Paint It Black!

If all else fails, that's my chosen color. This morning I hit the mother of all garage sales! There is a neighborhood here in town that holds a garage sale every other year. There were at least 4 or five sales on every street. I found lots of goodies. No minis officially.

I did however find this gem of a shelf for two dollars.

Some crazy person had painted it pink and someone before that had painted it black. It is ashamed that they didn't just leave it with the original wood finish.

I decided that since I only paid two bucks, I wasn't going to go to the trouble of stripping it at the moment. I couldn't take the pink so I went with the Rolling Stones and decided to "Paint it black."

The interior of the shelf is 9 1/2" high.....Room height....The width is 14 1/2" not a bad room length. The shelf on the bottom is about 7" deep.

Being a crazed miniaturist, I didn't see "shelf". I saw "room". After I finished painting it, I whipped out a piece of illustration board and a lonely piece of wallpaper that had no mates.

I cut the board to 9 1/2" by 14 1/2". I spray glued the paper to the front and wrapped the edges around to the back and voila! Room shelf.

I could have filled in the sides, cut to shape and finished both sides, but I wanted instant gratification and so did Tessie.

She has already moved in a few pieces of furniture, just to give you some idea of scale. I hung it on the bedroom wall, adjacent to the TV. She and Zar are watching some blood and guts, shoot'em up movie now.

In answer to your next question.....Yes. I am going back to work on the townhouse as soon as I finish here. Maybe..... After all, it's Saturday. I might just take the rest of the day off. Please, don't tell Tessie!

See you tomorrow.

What a great find Casey. At least it will keep Zar and Tessie out of mischief if they are up there watching a film..x

That shelf is fab! You have so nice stuff over there, here the fleamarkets (we don't have any caraga sales) are full of crab or if you find something remotely nice, it costs a big penny :(

And I do agree, paint is black :) I've always said that before throwing a piece of furniture away, paint it first black and see if you like it :) And I do love black :)

You are so lucky, what a great find and you worked on it right away. No moss on your rolling stones, good for you!! Tessie looks like she loves it.

Casey what a find and what you have done it looks really fantastic

Illustration board? what is that? There are so many and we call boards different names sometimes, I don't know why!
but there you have it!

Deni, illustration board is about the same weight as mat board only it is white on one side for "illustrators" to draw on(smoother finish). I used to use it for fashion illustration in college. Our Michael's no longer carries mat board by the sheet. It does carry illustration board in the dept where the drawing pads are. It runs about the same price.

Thank you Casey!
I wasn't sure, I also use foam core board but I find it a bit soft
I have bundles of matt board I use for many things that I found for free, my most favourite of all is Gator board but I can't find it here in OZ and it is very expensive, so matt board it is lol

Love, love, love that shelf! I've been trying to find one for a friend and the ones I find always seem to be around $65 in the antique shops-- you got a deal!
Hugs,
Jill
