Mysteries... No Minis...

All of that sleep yesterday, left me feeling like the Energizer Bunny! I went out this morning and bought plants.

But first, an old family mystery.  This piece was handed down in an old tool box that my grandfather gave to my father.  He gave it to me.

Non of us were able to identify it.  I thought maybe some of my friends could recognize it and tell me about it.

IT is made of very, verrry hard wood of some kind.  I thought maybe walnut at first, but I don't think so.  It is extremely hard.  I carve walnut all of the time... This is NOT that! At least not the same stuff that I use.

Nobody that I have shown it to can identify the wood or the tool.  It appears to be a marking and measuring tool of some kind... On the left end on the first photo you can see a piece of brass wedged into the end and shaped to match the curve of the tool.  The other end is just plain curved wood.  It also appears to have been carved with a B.  The person got as far as a very scratchy outline.  It looks to be very old too.  Maybe someone marking his possession.  That's on one wide side.

On the other wide side there is a deeper cut that appears to be either a 60 or an 09, depending on how you look at it.
This is the narrower side of the tool.  No marks on either of the narrow sides.  HELP!  Please!

It was so nice when I got home that I spent some time in the back yard.  Re potting and rearranging things.

I moved April's wind chime out where it could be seen.  I added a little something to it.  I have been seeing butterfly feeders all over the Pinterest sites. People are hanging and laying out oranges to attract butterflies.

So far, nary a one.
The rest of the orange, I sliced and laid out on a plate... So far, I haven't seen any of them there either.

They are all over the back yard.. The butterflies.  All day long.

I did go out to look and on the right side of the plate, there is a black spot... That's a bee... I have a bee feeder in the back yard... No wait.  I actually have two of those.  They get on  the hummingbird feeder all the time too.  I just wonder if the honey they make tastes like sugar water...

I am going to go work on minis now... I had a 3:00AM brainstorm.  I am going to try to make embossed tile with leather embossing tools on illustration board.  I tried a few early this morning. I think it will work!  I will let you know tomorrow.  This could be a whole new project!

Back to the real world.

See you tomorrow.

Hmmm. . . That's a tough one. The wood looks like oak. I thought the tool might work as some kind of molding plane, but the ones on Google images don't have a part that looks like your tool.

Sherrill, there are no, or have there any blades attached to this piece. The brass piece is a protection for the edge.

Casey, I'm thinking it's some kind of scribing tool for plaster work. You'd need a hard tool to make a dent in wet plaster Hugs
