I used some of the old foam core that I had. It is just a hair thicker than the new stuff that is around now perfect for the height of the first steps when stacked in twos.
I redrew the lines on the back wall, until I was satisfied that they were going to work. When I erased the lines not in use, I used a LOT of eraser.
By cutting into the stacked piece and fitting the new foam core section into the corners of that section, I get a smooth line.
As you can see, it is actually even with the floor of the upper section...Success!
The fireplace will have a couple more sections on it. Being curved, I am going to have to do that in sections as well.
I have the opening lightly drawn just to see how it will look. I also drew in a tentative log storage space as well.
I still have to do a bit of mocking... The fireplace and log storage have to be mocked. I use the term mocking loosely. A lot of these structures will be kept in the finished room. Everything will be covered with other materials. I have in mind veneers for the sides and bottom of the pit and the treads on the stairs. Lots of spackling paste for the plaster and upholstery for the padded seating...
The Terrible Two + One are doing very well. No bickering today...There is room enough for everyone to have a place to themselves. Maybe that is the solution. A place for everyone in every structure...Although, I have a feeling that as soon as it is finished they will all be trying to get the upper hand...We shall see...
I am still leaning towards Zar as owner. He seems most comfortable here.

Hi Casey! I think that your staircase is looking really good and you have used some clever solutions to get it built and secured! You are enormously creative and innovative and this is going to be an extremely interesting display when it's completed.

piece with steps cut out or separate
pieces stacked?

Phyllisa, the other steps consist of two side pieces in the shape of the steps. Between those are pieces that make up the steps and risers. It will all be covered, so I have the option of building it with different methods for the two sections. It will become clearer as I go.
Hi Casey, I just love this idea! Maybe one day I'll get brave enough to try making my own roombox instead of using a kit. Until then, I can just watch your fabulous work and dream:) My vote is for Zar to get this place. Groovy steampunk bachelor pad perhaps? Hugs, Sarah

Although he does have that cool
trailer which he doesn't seem to spend much time in unless it is at night, perhaps?

Phyllisa, nights in the trailer seem to be enough for him. He is a bit claustrophobic and there's not enough room in there to swing a cat... So far he is at the top of the list for the pit. I don't think that Tessie wants a place called "The Pit". LOL
