Calendar Girl....

Yesterday I solved the problem of the name for the cottage. I am making April and Seth pick one out. They have both spent time in various parts of Russia. I am sure that they will come up with something.

The next step to tackle on the cottage was the siding. Older Russian siding doesn't overlap like ours in the US. The boards sit flat against the wall of the house atop one another. I needed to reproduce this effect and make it look like it had been on the house for a while.

I was rummaging around the workroom, with Tessie's help....Or hindrance....

I have to give her credit for finding just the thing to try.

She jumped into my calendar drawer. I have lots of the old Japanese scroll calendars from the 70s and 80s. Thank goodness I saved them. The only ones that I have seen, in this style, lately are made of heavy paper. No wood involved anymore.

I have used these for clapboard siding on half inch houses for years, so why not flat siding on the cottage? I don't have anything to lose by trying it.

Tessie picked out this one from 1987 because it had a cute picture of a dog painted on it. She didn't think about the dog ending up on the inside of the siding boards against the house.....Shhhhh....Don't tell her!

I started on the side with the extension. When I finished there and turned to the front section, Tessie and Zar made themselves comfortable to watch the proceedings.

So far, so good...I have done about half of the front. The nice thing about this wood is, it is very easy to cut with scissors and it takes paint well.

As you can see, I am going to have to do a bit of trimming around the door and window openings.

The frames can sit right on top of the siding because it is so thin.

After I finish gluing it on, it will get a coat of gesso and then paint. The basic siding should be done by tomorrow....Then the fun begins. Gingerbread. Here we come. I need to go get the books that I showed you a couple of days ago. They have some nice patterns for window and door headings. If I can't find some that I like there, I can always go back to the Russian website with all of the neat houses....Decisions....Decisions....Decisions.

Back to siding.

See you tomorrow.

Debbie, I don't know about that side of the big pond, but on this side, those calendars are getting to be scarce as hen's teeth! Watch out for them! They are really handy for lots of things.
