Steampunk Goggles and Apron

Zar will be doing a bit of welding and working with gears and all of that. He needed a pair of goggles and a leather apron for the tasks. I was going to make you guess what the start of the goggles were, but that wouldn't be fair. They just look like two little lumps.

I went and got the three hole punch. That was the only one that I could find that was approximately the right size for the lenses. I had some clear acetate left from windows in house kits. I started punching a few. I opened the reservoir and found that in my punching, somewhere along the line, I had punched holes in bottle green acetate. Perfect. I didn't have to dye the lenses.

I got out a piece of brown chamois and cut a piece about 1/4" wide and long enough to fit around each lens. I used fast grab to fasten one edge around each of them. Then I trimmed them, starting at the seam, very narrow to the widest part opposite. so that the outside of the goggles would fit against the face. The one in the foreground has been trimmed.

Then I glued a jump ring to the front of each lens. A tiny piece of leather was glued between the shorter side of the leather for a bridge. Then a strap was glued to each side and a buckle to one end of one side. The whole contraption was fitted to Balthazar's head and glued together tight enough to fit, but loose enough to slip off.
I was so excited that I didn't take photos of the steps on either the goggles or the apron.

The apron is very simple. You just cut a piece as long as you want the front of the apron and as wide as you want it to be around him. Then you fold it in half lengthwise and cut a quarter circle out of the top edges. It is basically like a barbecue apron. I cut more 1/8" leather strips for the ties in the back and one to go around his neck. I glued one end of each of the ties at the top back corners. The neck strap was glued to the underside of the front on one side. A buckle was slipped on to the other end and it was glued in place on the front of the apron. Put it on and tie the ties and there you go! Instant welder. Oh. I did put a patch pocket on the front. That and the buckle at the neck are optional.

Zar is ready to get to work. Unfortunately, there is no workshop yet.

I went in to check on Cordelia. She came out on the porch to meet me....... When I asked where the Steampunk bike came from, she answered that it was the sewing machine repairman's. She said that Tessie messed the machine up the last time she stayed there. Uh huh.....

A friend wrote last night to tell me to beware of Cordelia. Debi brought up an interesting point. How does a maid of all work afford foot deep lace on the bottom of her apron and petticoat on her salary? I think that she worked for a well to do family in London before. Maybe they were hand me downs from the lady of the house. At least I hope that's how she got them....... She seems to be able to come up with a quick answer when need be.....

I am off to pick up the second try on my glasses now. Wish me luck.

See you tomorrow.

Love Zar's goggles and apron. Genius yet again!
I too will be getting my new glases shortly and as you are probably aware i need to wear two pairs at the moment while i await my new ones. Longing to be able to see again.
Hope your second pair are ok when you collect them and you can see again. Sometimes it takes a while for your eyes to adjust to a new pair if the strength goes up a lot.
Maybe that's why your other pair didnt feel right.

I second Rosanna's comment.

If Cordi has the proper references from a known family with means, then it is very likely her lacy attire was either a hand-me-down from her lady or a gift for good service upon her exit from employ. Perhaps she worked in the household from childhood, having been born to the family's favorite maid and butler, thus becoming a favorite with the household.

A simple letter from Zar to her former employers ought to clear things up nicely.

Brilliant Casey love the goggles. I wonder what inventions your "steampunk" guy is going to make?..

Thanks for the compliments ladies. Nikki, thanks to Rosanna, I knew what questions to ask when I went back to have the eyes retested. This second pair is a whole new perscription. They were somehow centered wrong and I was seeing everything fan out at a distance and could only see 12" from my nose close up. Now I can actually see the computer screen without leaning forward! These are great now. The only problem now is I can see all of the dirt that I was missing when cleaning with the other ones......

Hi Casey. I take my glasses off when i dont want to see dust and dirt.
As soon as they go on out comes the hoover... lol.
It's better to live in the world at times not seeing anything past your nose.

Great green lens on the goggles! I wish my spectacles were green. But then folks might think I'm envious all the time.

Cordelia is a bit too polished for a maid...perhaps at one time she was a nanny or governess?
