The Wind is BLOWING!!!

I feel like crawling back into bed and pulling the covers over my head.

The wind has been blowing sideways ever since I got up this morning.  Can you tell that I don't like wind?  Nope.  No way, no how!

Tessie and Zar are comfy cozy in the basket maker's workshop.  I would like to crawl in there and watch TV, but there is no room.  They have all of the good seats and Spike has the floor.
I got to looking around in there.  It needs a thorough cleaning... Maybe I will do that when I finish here.

Every time I clean in there, I get sidetracked and start making baskets again... I guess it could be worse... I could just decide to take a nap.  At least I would be doing minis if I make baskets...

My other problem is... Yup... The workroom is a mess again.  I need to go in there and clean up too.

I don't want to clean!  I want to make baskets!

I would like to make more like the swirled one in the second photo... In order to do that, I have to climb over things in the workroom to get to the supplies...

Maybe I should just give up and actually do more cleaning... Hmmmm.   Where have I heard that before?

Did I mention that I don't like the wind? Maybe I will just go in the bedroom and watch K Dramas with the Terrible Two plus One and start over with the other stuff tomorrow, bright and early. Yes. That sounds like the right thing to do.

See you tomorrow!  Bright and Early. I'll be up by 5:00 AM.  How about you?

I'm a Basket Case!

And so is Tessie.  The Witches are still working on baskets, so I sent Tessie in to clean the basket shop...

She was not too happy about that...

She found a mouse on the table eating a sandwich... Very dusty floors and all of the supplies in a mess.

She ran around the house looking for Sir Reggie... He was the last one to claim the basket shop. Then he decided it was too much work and left it to fall to pieces.

After he sold the townhouse back to Tessie, he seems to have disappeared...

None of us have seen him since.
I guess I should go help Tessie clean up.  The floors are thick with dust and everything is tipped over and unwound.

It's not her responsibility to clean up.  But it should be cleaned up before Wednesday, when the witches show up.

Remember the pots that I planted up yesterday?

I looked this morning and I couldn't believe how much this one has grown since yesterday.

I couldn't even see the leaves on it.  It is now sprouting babies all over the place...

I am not sure if anyone is going to want to adopt such a prolific plant! It isn't even an adult yet and it is going crazy!

Maybe I should just sit and watch it grow and take notes.  Too bad all plants don't do this.

I know one thing!  I am NOT going to water it until Wednesday... They will probably overtake the whole house if I do.  I may have to lock them in the big birdcage in the family room.  At least I would feel safer if they weren't spreading all over the house.  They are scary!

See you tomorrow.

It's Getting Warmer!!!

And I still didn't clean the workroom...

Walter played golf this morning and I just started cleaning out bookcases.

I decided to show you the calendar that Walter got me for Christmas by month.  This is the one for January.  Daisy's Cottage.

One page for each month, when I don't have much to say... I am getting back to being more talkative, but I had a follow up Dr. appointment today, so not much mini-ing. Still doing great!

I did get some more done on the rug.  Part of one corner got filled with gray...

Slow and steady wins the race...

Zar and Tessie are going from place to place and looking for things to get me going...

This morning they decided that I didn't clean the floor on the basket shop like I was supposed to...

Like "I" was supposed to???

Tessie has started rooting around under the bed, looking for her next house.  I think I am in trouble.  She asked this morning, "How hard would it be to combine a Harrison, a Magnolia and a Vineyard Cottage into one big place for me to live?  I could spread out more..."  And then without batting an eye, she continued.  " I could take over Zar's  Clockwork Cottage.  He's not using it.  And Cordelia never goes home.  That would add a few rooms...".

At that point, I ran into the bedroom and started pulling kits from under the bed... How best to get rid of them fast?  A large fire in the back yard comes to mind.  No.. The neighbors would complain.  Somebody help!!! She is now in the workroom digging through the plant shelf where I have a bunch of wooden, antique grocery boxes... Cracker box was supposed to be a kitchen at one time...

While she was flinging boxes down from above.... I quietly backed out of the room and locked the door... I have a feeling that I am going to be doing a lot of cleaning in there tomorrow.  Not stuff that I have messed up.  First thing I am going to look for is that little dungeon room that I made from a perfume gift box, several years ago...  Or maybe I will reinstate the use of the glass display box from whence she came.  I still have the dresser, chair and sewing box that she lived with back then... Maybe if she lives in there for a couple of weeks, she will calm down and decide she likes the homes that she already has... Forest Fantasy Cottage has hardly been used at all...

I am going now to put a chair under the door handle of the workroom... Then I am going to make plans of my own... First, a nice long nap... Then I will make a list of things that I want to do.

Somebody throw me a pillow.  Nap time.

See you tomorrow.

I Should Have Had it Signed and Notarized....

It was agreed that I would work on the Russian rug today... I did... It doesn't look like I have done a lot, but I am back on the right track and it is coming right along...

I did have to stop when the home health care nurse came in this morning... I am doing great and back at a lot of the stuff I usually do... Unfortunately, some of it isn't minis...

I think that I converted the nurse to the world of minis.  We took her around for a tour of a few of the houses and she liked what she saw. I gave her my card with the URL on it and she sounded like she was going to go home and look at the blog. I have one more visit from her tomorrow morning.  Then I am free until Monday, when I see both doctors.  They seem to think that I am doing really well, so far.

Tessie agreed to work on a basket or two, if I would keep plugging along on the rug...

She looks good sitting there with a basket in her lap.  However... I think that was a cover for watching the second of the "Divergent" movies.  I was watching whilst working.  She was watching whilst faking...

Notice, that is one of those canvas baskets that can only be worked on with a needle and thread... I saw NO signs of needle of thread in the area..

In fact, at one point, I went out to cover plants(freezing tonight).  When I came back in, this is what I found.

Those two can catch a cat nap anywhere, anytime.... That was the blanket that I was using to keep my feet warm... To be specific... My feet were right about where Kota's tail is, before I went out to cover the plants...

I am going back now to try to claim my coverlet...They can stay if they give me back my spot under the zebra blanket... If not, there is going to be a bit of a battle over territory!  And I intend to win.  My feet are cold!

See you tomorrow.

All For Nothing...

I saw a couple of ideas for storing jewelry on Pinterest a week or so ago.

I have had my rings in the top opening of my jewelry chest/embroidery chest...

Every time I needed to get in there, I had to lift whatever was on top, to gain access... Not convenient.  The crypt was a heavy move.

I thought that this book/ ring holder was very clever.  You can definitely get a lot of rings in one book.  I have books everywhere and some I never look at.  A good way to use them.

The other idea was for bracelets.  I have a couple more bottles like this somewhere... If I ever find them, I will have more than enough storage for my bracelets.

It is easy to get just one bracelet on and off.  Unlike the bracelet bar that I bought at Walmart a couple of years ago.  That one, I had to fight with to get the bracelets on and off.
This one, I simply grab the bracelet I want and pull it up over the top.

I just thought that someone might like one of the two ideas.
Actually, I am going to keep using the bottle idea.  That one is a winner.

The book, I am not so sure.  The rings keep falling out of the cracks.

I think it would be much easier if all of the rings had the same sized bands.

I kept thinking and finally solved the problem.  I went and got the basket shop. It is very light and easy to move.  Tessie likes that one.  She is a very good basket maker and enjoys spending time there.

Now maybe she will get some baskets made whilst I am working on the Forest Fantasy Cottage... She can yell at me and tell me what I am doing wrong from across the room.

I am going to put the rings back in the top of the chest now.  All I have to do is move Tessie and baskets when I want to get to the rings. That should be easy enough. And I don't have to run after rolling rings that way.

Back to work.

See you tomorrow.

Having Fun Now...?

OK.  I went after the basket shop this morning.

I usually just show the whole shop.  No close ups.

This time, I decided to get a little closer.  If you poke the photos, you can get even closer.

In the first photo, the top shelf, over the door has only one basket that I didn't make.  That's the Chinese basket third from the left.  It is hard to see the first one....Doesn't matter.  It's a small crocheted basket...Yes you can crochet baskets as well as weave them. There's a better view of it in the second photo. Top right.

Still the first photo. The blue lined basket, second from the right is the one and only shaker bent wood basket that I have left.  I used to sell those at shows.  They were made out of the very thin wooden calendars.  Maybe one of these days, I will make some to show you how it's done.  It involves ammonia.  Very smelly.

The left wall has all kinds.  There are woven, of several types. The light one on the second shelf from the top was molded around the bottom of a bottle with needlepoint canvas.  A couple were simply needlepoint canvas with embroidery thread running through the mesh, fastened to a woodsie.

The coiled wall piece above is over dyed thread on covered wire, like I do my coiled baskets.

This is the work area.  I tried to show some of the baskets in progress so that you can see how they are done.

A friend made the metal egg basket under the wicker planter.  It is made of hardware cloth, simply bent into shape and the eggs are small white beans.

I consider the wicker a form of basket weaving.  The same techniques are used to do these pieces.

Here on the right wall, there is even a hat that is woven.  I didn't do it.  Twenty five years ago, you could buy these at a quarter a piece.  They were woven in Mexico.  I painted them and added silk flowers.  Again, I think that this is about the only one I have left of these.

The herringbone woven nest of baskets in the right hand corner are also from Mexico.  The smallest one is less than a half inch across.  And yes, It is in the herringbone weave also.

The dirty green sewing basket is one that I made a long time ago.  Sewing thread and wire.
As usual, Tessie showed up after I finished cleaning and straightening.

She plopped down in the chair.  Put her feet up on an over turned basket and relaxed, saying, "It's so nice to have a clean workspace."

Mind you, she hasn't stepped foot in here for months.  Because it was, to quote her, "Much too messy to get anything done."

I didn't make the mess....Why do I get to clean it up?

It happens every year about this time.  I clean it.  She messes it up again.

I am going back to see what else needs cleaning and straightening.  Whilst I am doing that, you can go get caught up on basket making.  I discovered that there are now 6 pages of basket related entries.  The last page(earliest dates) has a couple of good tutorials...Hang in there. http://caseymini.blogspot.com/search/label/baskets

See you tomorrow.

Desert Sunset and Rearranging...

I took this photo from the back porch last night.  Monsoons bring wonderful sunsets.
This morning, Walter left at 4:30AM to play golf...He should know better than to wake me up and leave me sitting here with nothing to do...

So I moved.  The workroom is really hot and muggy this time of year.  And besides, I can't watch K Dramas in there whilst working.  I am a Korean Drama addict and am not trying to get over it.  Much better than American TV, even if I do have to read subtitles.

Yes.  I moved the worktable back to the bedroom for the monsoon season.  Poor Walter.  He never knows what he is going to come home to in the furniture arranging department.

I put the basket shop on the table because it is in dire need of a good cleaning.

And besides, the cat basket comes under that domain.

Unfortunately, I think that I started something.  Now everybody, including Tessie and Theo the tiger cub, wants one.

Technically, Tessie already has a basket chair in the roof garden of the town house...It is very similar in shape.  But it's wicker and she wants all of that color.  Wait! It's upholstered in 60s Beatles fabric.  Very  bright.

It seems that "first come, first serve" is the order of the day.  Licorice got there first.

Licorice was a cat that we had back when April was young and basically her cat.  I made a mini of him after he passed on.  He seems to like it in the new basket.

Lets see now...I need to make one bunny hutch, one puppy palace, one tiger cave.  "No Tessie.  You can't have seconds.  You already have yours!".

While moving things, I discovered that I only have the pattern for the chair bottoms in wicker left....No actual chair bottoms.  So...Being sidetracked Sadie, I grabbed some 1/16" walnut scraps and drew out 9 chair seats and two scrap table/planter blanks. I also have no settee blanks. I hate it when I run out and have to start over.  No fun at all...

Now all I have to do is cut them out and drill about a thousand holes and I will be all set...Can you tell that this is the part I don't like doing?  I just want to weave.

Back to work.

See you tomorrow.

Poor Basket Shop....

I finished the basket this morning...

I wanted you to see a close up of what you can do if you add an extra twist between each spoke.  See the smaller looking stitches right in the center?  That's all I did to make those look different.

After I finished weaving, I ran a line of white glue around the top and let it dry.  Then I cut off the wires, flush with the top, with side cutters.  I braided three pieces of the same thread together to cover the top, where the wires were and the wooden bottom edge.

About that time Tessie wandered in and, of all things, said, "OK.  Back to business.  I am ready to work.".  Then she grabbed the new basket and ran.

I had a good idea where she was headed.  She considers the basket shop hers  now.  But we were both in for a big surprise!

It has been moved around a bit for Christmas and other occasions...Front out.

Neither of us ever looked inside.  It was a bit of a mess.
I went and got some glue for the shelf that had been jarred right off of the wall, a stiff brush and started to work...

Meanwhile, Tessie did what she does best...

She pulled up a chair and footstool and, holding the new basket(for safekeeping), started barking orders.

I pretty much pulled everything out and started over.

She pretty much staid in the chair....Barking orders...

The shop now looks much more like it should and she settled in to "work".

That consisted of posing for photos in a working position...

She didn't do even one turn of the thread of the Native American coiled basket that she is holding....Afraid she'd break a nail...

That basket is a traditional design from this area and it has a ways to go before it is finished.

After the photo, Tessie dropped the basket like a hot potato and informed me that it felt good to have the basket shop all clean again....

Then she had the nerve to add, "We should do this every day.  One shop a day...My shops of course.  Let me see, there is the tea shop, the millinery shop, the....". I tuned her out about there...

It does sound like a good idea, except for the part where she used the word "we".  Oh well...At least she is talking to me again...I wonder how long it will last this time?

She's still not talking to Zar. And he's still in the roof garden of the Clockwork Caravan singing the blues.

Don't forget to vote.  See you tomorrow.

Ready to Go?

OK. I am as ready as I will ever be to do this. Tessie and Zar are going along to weave baskets and give moral support.I will report in after I finish.

Don't forget to vote.

See you later.

Post Script
.....I am back. Everything went wonderfully.

I have't stopped running since 4:30AM! I am one pooped petunia, as my dad used to say.

I got there about 11:50. Had lunch with everybody.....I didn't have to talk while everyone ate. Thank goodness! I started talking about 12:20 or so. After I finished talking, with questions from the audience interspersed, people came up to the table and talked some more. They seemed to like it.

If any of the people that were there come here to check out the blog, come on in, feel free to look around and join the party! Thanks for coming!

I didn't get home until about 2:30. For a short day, it was a looong day!
Tessie and I both need a nap now.

See you tomorrow.

Baskets and Lunch.....

Tessie and I are in the same boat. When she was working on a basket this morning, she looked down to see a friend chomping on a sandwich. If you poke the photo, you can see Malcolm...Yup, a mouse.

I am not comparing people to mice, but I found out just a couple of weeks ago that the lecture that I am doing at the miniature museum is to be done while the audience is eating box lunches from Beyond Bread. This should be interesting. I have never lectured during lunch....After lunch, yes....During, no.

I have visions of it going something like....Me, "Baskets have been found in 4,00o year old Mesopotamian tombs." Them, "Could somebody please pass the mustard?"

I am just kidding about that part, but having never done this before while people are eating, does make me a bit nervous. Wish me luck....

Since it's only a couple of days hence, both Tessie and I are basket making full speed.

Her full speed is..... Work a row. Wander off and play with the cats for twenty minutes. Work a row. Go find Zar and torment him for twenty two minutes. Work half a row. Go raid the refrigerator. Forget about working....Go lie down and moan, "I am soooo exhausted...." She does it well.

I must confess that I am not much better. Remember the larger basket that I was working on last week? Don't tell anybody, but I just picked it up again this morning. I have three more rows done since you last saw it.

Here it is with Tessie gloating over the one that she claims to have finished....It's really one that I made last year. She thinks that I am really forgetful....Sometimes I am, but not when it comes to something that I put that much work into.

I am going back to work on the one that she is sitting in now. All I have to do is get her to go relax somewhere else while I work.

You are doing great on the voting. Keep up the good work. I appreciate it.

See you tomorrow.

I Am Going to Be a Basket Case......

After much discussion, this morning Tessie and Zar installed a shelf across the front of the room. It spans the entire length of the wall....Just what I needed. A space for more baskets.

I didn't have to do the shelf, but the installation took a a worrisome turn when they propped it up with one of the baskets and another shelf board. Thank goodness they didn't have a place to install that one....Don't you dare tell them that it would fit high on the left hand wall! Hush!

Tessie didn't even wait until the glue was dry to start moving baskets up on the shelf. It is not full and there are holes on all of the other shelves. I begged her to wait. Thank goodness they used Aleene's Quick Drying glue. So far the shelf is holding...Fingers crossed.

This is the sum total of what I produced yesterday. Somebody shoo the squirrel out before he has a basket for lunch. Please?

The top one is a coiled tray basket with open weave in places.

The bottom row is a plain basket bottom. Next is a finished basket with an open weave row on the side and several open weave rows on the top. It is just an art piece. No utilitarian value. Next is the squirrel...After him is a half finished tray basket with two colors of Threadworx overdyed color. You saw the blue feather basket yesterday. And the last one is a partially finished similar to the blue feather one.(Actually, I only did a couple of rows on that one yesterday. It was already started.

I finally found a place for one of my favorite pieces. It is a wall hanging and seems to fit nicely over the top of the shelves on the left side. Hopefully, that will distract Tessie and Zar from putting a shelf on that side. As you can see, there are already holes to fill.

I really think that we have enough shelving to fill. I am now taking away the tools and banishing the two carpenters to the townhouse for the rest of the day.

I am off to Wednesday Witches mini meeting and I really don't want them building while I am away. I could wind up with a whole other room to fill with baskets. No more. Please!

See you tomorrow.

Where Did You Go???

I am not sure how she managed to get out of the house and into the garage, but when we arrived home Tessie was sitting on the door knob, angrily shaking her finger at us. Need I say, she was not happy?

OK, which one of you woke her up and told her we left???

She ranted and raved for a couple of hours, "How could you leave me behind? They had turkey. You ate turkey!!! I didn't get any turkey. You didn't even bring me a cranberry in a take out box!"....On and on....

I put in earplugs and went to bed.

As soon as I got up this morning, it started again. Walter and I left. We went shopping for an i pad for me and an i pod for him. That's what we are getting for Christmas....A little early.

We got the i pad. Walter brought me home and then went looking again for an i pad. He's smart. He left and didn't have to hear anymore of the uproar.

As soon as he did, Tessie started again. I couldn't stand it, so I asked what I could do to make it up to her...

First she insisted that I take her cottage from the top of the bookshelf and put it down in the living room so that she would be close to the tree on Christmas day.

Next, she wanted the basket shop moved down next to it. She explained, "It has a lot of room in it and I can store my gifts in there. Also, I can use the baskets to carry MY gifts from the tree to my cottage and the shop."

Then she wanted both cottages decorated for Christmas. I didn't think that was unreasonable. I didn't tell her that I was going to do that anyway. Let her think that I am making amends.

The basket cottage already has a wreath on the door. Don't tell. I didn't take it down last year....Oops.
Anyway, then I had to move the miniature shop, the porch, and the quilt shop to the top of the bookcase. That was a job and a half. The quilt shop is quite heavy, but I got it done.

I told Tessie that was all I was going to do today.

She glared at me and hissed, "Your workroom needs finishing so that you can find all of the decorations for my house....You can't quit yet!".

I didn't think that it was a good idea to cross a witch holding a broom. I think that particular broom is a combination sweeper and spell binder. I have seen her use it for a wand a few times and I don't think I want her using it on me.

I am now back in the workroom cleaning furiously. Soon I will start decorating for Christmas for real.

"No, Tessie! Put down that broomstick! I'm still cleaning honest! See? I found the floor!"

See you tomorrow.

That Darned Cat......

Mookie has been a very busy cat this holiday season! I am going to be very busy fixing what he had a great deal of fun doing......

His first adventure was right in front of my eyes and so quick that I couldn't stop him. See those cute little double doors on the front of the Haberdashery? I was sitting at the computer about 3 feet in front of it. Mookie was wandering around on top of the roll top desk where it sits. The first thing I knew, I looked up and saw his backside and the end of his tail disappearing through those little doors. Have you ever had a feeling of total panic about one of your creations? I did right then! Luckily, my husband was home and we managed to lift the building down and get the top off of it. Mookie calmly hopped out and went on his merry way. He only moved one table out of place. You will notice that now it sits even with the front edge of the roll top so that he doesn't have anyplace to walk. It is pretty much cat proof now. He still sleeps on top. I think he is hoping that the ceiling will collapse so that he can get inside once again. It's NOT going to happen!

You know how cats are. They are nothing, if not persistent. Mookie is especially so. I put the basket shop on the Chinese chest in the living room and decorated it with snow and other winter things for Christmas. I pushed it all the way to the back of the chest so that the back couldn't be seen. Again, in my presence, Mookie nonchalantly strolled over to the chest, jumped up and by the time I could get to him he had jumped over the roof and in through the opening. My luck wasn't so good that time. It just all has to be put back in place. It looks worse than it is. It will just take a little time. I think that some things are going to be glued down this time. I wanted to do some final placement before I did that. It is now time to get it done. The opening wasn't even visible, but he watched every step of the build and knew the ins and outs. Pardon the pun!

The next "accident" was partially my own fault. I moved the greenhouse into the computer room and sat it on the edge of the table with the Mystery House.......Yup. You guessed it. Mookie thought that would be a dandy place to land from his cat tree....Oops. Thank goodness the windows are plexi. Nothing was broken. I don't have things glued down in there because I am constantly stealing plants and wicker from the greenhouse to put in other minis. Again, it will just need straightening.

Yesterday I turned the Mystery House around to take the party photos.(Please notice that the photo is a close up.) That house is three feet high and I have it in a corner so that the only way a certain cat could get in it would be over the top and into the back.........You guessed it. Mookie has evidently been having parties of his own in there when I wasn't around to chaperon. I keep saying I am going to work on that one and finish it one of these days. Do you suppose that he is trying to tell me something?

Anyway, you can guess what I will be doing today for the rest of the day.

See you tomorrow.

Forget the Chimney......

I have been setting up more Christmas displays today. I did use the basket workshop for one of them. Here it is. Every year I set up some kind of scene on the top of this Chinese chest. I am liking the basket shop a lot. It adapted to this use very well. All I did was use an old cheapo Christmas tree skirt for the snow. And the trees I already had so no expense there. Santa and the snowman, same thing. They were old tree ornaments. I tore up some fiber fill for the snow on the roof and tucked some in around the stones and bushes. Please ignore the fact that Santa has to use the front door. I was planning on this being a work shop in a warm climate. Anyway, there you have it. Instant Christmas.

Another Christmas tradition around here is decorating the Above Par Golf shop front porch. My husband is a Snoopy fan so the Peanuts gang get to come to the party every year.
The snowman golfer sneaked in a couple of years ago. I try to find something pertaining to golf to decorate with when I see it.

Last but not least, I got around to the big stuff the other day. This guy is standing in our front yard. You have to understand that it has only snowed a couple of times in the Christmas season in all of the years that I have lived here.....OK, so it snowed once on Easter, but that hardly counts. That was just weird! I made him out of a twin sized quilt bat and stuffed him with fiberfill. He is built around a piece of PVC pipe. I did it so that his PVC pipe slides down over a garden post that I have hammered into the ground. Right now he is off his post. The wind is blowing hard and it's supposed to rain sometime today.....Nope. No snow in site. When you live in Arizona, you have to make your own out of whatever you have lying around the house.

I will get back to the rugs later today. Right now making real live peanutbutter fudge and cookies is more important. See you tomorrow.

One More Day......

I am essentially done with the basket shop. There are a few finishing touches, but they should be done by tomorrow. I cheated and took a photo of the outside with one of the landscaping pieces from the Mystery House. I still have to make a couple of those and I want a couple of topiary trees for the front step.
I did the roof line trim yesterday. I cut black card stock with fancy scissors. Then I topped that with strip wood in French blue and finished with a tiny square of strip wood stained with red iron oxide.
I am not sure if I want a sign on the outside or not. This is more of a basket maker's workshop than a store.
I am thinking that a lantern of some kind would look good over the front door too.
This is the finished interior, starting with the left side. Yes, there is a mouse in the right bottom corner. The basket maker has left the premises temporarily and his sandwich and chips on the table( a trade with my friend Val in England)are unguarded at the moment. The basket maker won't miss a few crumbs.
The basket maker is in the middle of doing a wicker chair. It only needs trimming and a seat cushion. It's one of the things that I found in my wicker stash, unfinished. It's a great way to use it without having to do more work. Cheating can be useful at times.....
In the right side photo you can see the mouse again and this time the sandwich and chips.
I decided to keep the chair from Colombia. It went well with the chunky worktable that I did this morning.
I also had enough room to keep the little wicker table.
In this photo you can see a much better shot of the nest of baskets from Mexico. See what I mean about the weave? It is very unusual. I like the herringbone design on the sides.
Back to work. As Yoda would say, "Finish, I must."
See you tomorrow.
